Sacraments

SacramentsThe Sacrament of Baptism

Baptism is the foundation for all ministry and life in the church, and confers a commitment to follow Christ and spread his message throughout the world. Infants can be baptized soon after birth. At the time of baptism, parents vow to practice their faith and provide a Catholic upbringing for the child. Adults who have never been baptized take part in the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), and will typically be baptized at the Easter Vigil.

Parents are responsible for bringing their child to the Sacrament of Baptism as soon after birth as possible. Except in case of necessity, the church is the usual place of baptism.

In order that a child be baptized, it is necessary that the parents consent, or at least one of them, or someone legally standing in their place, and that there is reasonable hope that the child will be brought up in the Catholic Faith.

GODPARENTS: A person may only have one or two godparents (also called sponsors); if two are chosen, they must be male and female.

In order for someone to be eligible as a godparent they must be chosen by the parents, have the ability and the intention to fulfill the role, be at least 16 years of age, and be a confirmed Roman Catholic, who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist, is leading a life in harmony with the Catholic Faith (including Marriage) and will be a good role model for the one being baptized, and be neither the father nor the mother of the child.

A baptized person who belongs to another Christian community may be admitted only as a “Christian witness” (not a godparent) provided that there is at least one Roman Catholic godparent who fulfills the above criteria. A non-baptized person cannot be a witness.

Baptisms are held:
1st Sunday of each month at 1:00pm at Sacred Heart Church
3rd Saturday of each month at 2:00pm at St. Mary’s Church
or at a regularly scheduled Sunday Mass (9:00am & 11:30am at St. Mary/10:00am Sacred Heart)

A Baptism Preparation Class is required for parents and godparents.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation

As sinners, we recognize both our human limitations and failures and also God’s limitless love for us. God loves and forgives us, and the sacrament of reconciliation makes this gift of forgiveness a reality in the life of the sinner. We are restored to a proper relationship with God. Through the cleansing of our sins and guilt, we are once again made whole and holy.

Please visit our Preparing for Reconciliation page for additional information.

Saturday at 3:00pm at St. Mary’s Church
Saturday at 3:00pm at Sacred Heart Church
(and by appointment at both Churches)

The Sacrament of Matrimony

Couples should contact the Collaborative Office at least six months prior to their wedding date in order to prepare for the Sacrament of Marriage. Please call the Collaborative Offices to make arrangements to meet with a priest and discuss the requirements of the Sacrament of Marraige.

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick

Through the sacrament of anointing, Christ strengthens the faithful who are afflicted by illness, providing them with the strongest means of support. This is a ministry of comfort. Through Anointing, the sick are reminded that Christ and the Church are in communion with their suffering. The Holy Spirit shares the blessings of health, trust in God, and strength against temptation.

Please speak to one of the priests after Mass if you know someone who needs assistance, or call the Collaborative Office for an appointment.
